Turn the Savings Lock on
Your savings are yours. The free Savings Lock lets you get your savings extra protected from scammers who want to steal your money. Sooner or later, you, too, may have to deal with them. Scammers like to use time pressure, and they use clever ploys to trick you into transferring money quickly. To make sure you don’t fall victim to fraud and lose your savings, turn on the Savings Lock and eliminate fraud.

If the Savings Lock is on, nobody can access your savings — not even you! If you need your savings, make sure you turn the Savings Lock off in good time. It will take 24 hours before you can transfer money from your savings account to your current account.
How to turn the Savings Lock on and off on the ABN AMRO app
How to turn the Savings Lock on
- Open the ABN AMRO app and log in.
- Tap the savings account for which you want to turn on the Savings Lock.
- Tap Self service at the top right of your screen.
- Tap Set Savings Lock.
- A screen now opens in Internet Banking.
- Do you have more savings accounts where you want to activate the Savings Lock? Tap again the savings account for which you want to turn on the Savings Lock.
- Set the slider to on.
- Click Turn the Savings Lock on.
- Click Ok.
The Savings Lock is now on and you cannot access your savings.
- You can transfer money to your savings account in the usual way.
- You can’t transfer money from your savings account.
- Your savings are extra protected from scammers.
You will get a message confirming that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned on. If in fact you did not do this, please contact us right away.
How to turn the Savings Lock off
- Open the ABN AMRO app and log in.
- Tap the savings account for which you want to turn on the Savings Lock.
- Tap Self service at the top right of your screen.
- Tap Set Savings Lock.
- A screen now opens in Internet Banking.
- Do you have more savings accounts where you want to deactivate the Savings Lock? Then tap the savings account for which you want to turn off the Savings Lock.
- Set the slider to off.
- Click Turn the Savings Lock off.
The Savings Lock is now off and you will be able to access your savings again after 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, you will once again be able to transfer money from your savings account
- You can transfer money to your savings account in the usual way
- You can turn the Savings Lock back on at any time, even less than 24 hours after you have turned it off
You will get a message confirming that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned off. If in fact you did not do this, please contact us right away.
How to turn the Savings Lock on and off on Internet Banking
How to turn the Savings Lock on
- Go to Internet Banking and log in.
- Click on your savings account in the account overview.
- Find the Savings Lock above the search bar and payment orders. You will see a small lock icon. Click on it.
- A window will open on the right side of the screen. Slide the toggle to on and click on Activate Savings Lock.
- The Savings Lock is now active. You cannot access your savings.
Do you have more than one savings account? Then follow the steps per savings account on which you want to switch on the Savings Lock.
- You can transfer money to your savings account in the usual way.
- You can’t transfer money from your savings account.
- Your savings are extra protected from scammers.
You will get a message confirming that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned on. If in fact you did not do this, please contact us right away.
How to turn the Savings Lock off
- Log into Internet Banking.
- Click on your savings account in the account overview.
- Click More options at the top right of your screen, then select Savings Lock.
- Do you have more than one savings account? Then click again at the top of your screen on the savings account on which you want to switch off the Savings Lock.
- Slide bar to off and then click on the button Turn Savings Lock off.
The Savings Lock is now off and you will be able to access your savings again after 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, you will once again be able to transfer money from your savings account.
- You can transfer money to your savings account in the usual way.
- You can turn the Savings Lock back on at any time, even less than 24 hours after you have turned it off.
You will get a message confirming that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned off. If in fact you did not do this, please contact us right away.

For which savings accounts can I turn on the Savings Lock?
You can turn on the Savings Lock on the ABN AMRO app and on Internet Banking for the following savings accounts:

Who can turn on and turn off the Savings Lock on my savings account(s)?
Only you can do that, in the ABN AMRO app and on Internet Banking.
- If you have a joint savings account, both account holders can turn on and turn off the Savings Lock on that account.
- Children aged under 18 who have access to a savings account in their own name from which they are also allowed to make transfers can turn on and turn off the Savings Lock themselves.
- A person authorised to make domestic and international transfers from a savings account can turn on and turn off the Savings Lock for the account in question.
Will I receive confirmation when I turn the Savings Lock on or off?
Yes, you will get a Bankmail message confirming that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned on or turned off.
Tip: you can enable push notifications through the ABN AMRO app. You’ll then be notified as soon as the Savings Lock has been turned on or off and the 24-hour waiting time is over. Here's how to enable push notifications through the app.
If you get a message saying that the Savings Lock on your savings account has been turned on or turned off and you, your joint account holder or an authorised person did not do this. please contact us right away.
I need money right away from the savings account for which the Savings Lock has been turned on. Can I reduce the 24-hour waiting period?
No, you cannot reduce the waiting period. We cannot change the waiting period for you either. The 24-hour waiting period is intended to make things more difficult for scammers. They often want you to transfer money quickly to what they call ‘safe accounts’. A 24-hour waiting period helps ensure that you don’t fall for these clever tricks that scammers play. It also gives you time to contact us if you are unsure about a transfer.
I can access my savings 24 hours after I turn off the Savings Lock. Can I set this waiting time myself?
No, you cannot set the waiting time yourself. We cannot do that for you either. If you would like to be able to withdraw part of your savings right away, at any time, you can open an additional Direct Savings account free of charge. You can transfer the amount you want to be able to withdraw at any time to this savings account, and then turn on the Savings Lock on the savings account that contains the lion’s share of your savings.
What do I do if I have turned on the Savings Lock on the wrong savings account?
If you’ve inadvertently turned on the Savings Lock on the wrong savings account, you can turn it off again on this account on the ABN AMRO app and Internet Banking. You’ll be able to transfer money from the savings account again 24 hours later.
Here's how to turn off the Savings Lock on the ABN AMRO app:
- Open the ABN AMRO app and log in
- Tap the savings account for which you want to turn on the Savings Lock
- Tap ‘Self service’ at the top right of your screen
- Tap ‘Set Savings Lock’
- A screen now opens in Internet Banking
- In case you have more savings accounts, tap again the savings account for which you want to turn off the Savings Lock
- Set the slider to ‘off’
- Click ‘Turn the Savings Lock off’

I want to be able to withdraw part of my savings right away, at any time. How can I arrange this easily?
We can imagine that it is handy to always have some money on hand. You can open an additional Direct Savings account free of charge and turn on the Savings Lock on the savings account with the balance you do not need right away.
Let’s say you have a savings account that has €8,000 in it, and that you want to be able to withdraw €1,000 from it right away, at any time. In that case, you can open an additional Direct Savings account, deposit €1,000 and leave the remaining €7,000 in your existing savings account. You can turn on the Savings Lock on this account. That way, you ensure that most of your savings are extra protected.
