Become an ABN AMRO client to access the benefits of Preferred Banking

1. Check whether you meet the criteria

When you open your current account, we’ll ask for information about the income you receive on a monthly basis in your ABN AMRO account. Make sure the amount you enter is correct.

Preferred Banking is for ABN AMRO clients who meet the following criteria: they are aged over 18, live in the Netherlands, and have €100,000 or more in liquid assets and/or have a personal ABN AMRO account into which a minimum amount of money* is paid each month.

If you have a business account, are an expat or work as a medical professional, we regret to inform you that you can’t become a Preferred Banking client just yet. We’re working hard to make sure you can access Preferred Banking in the future.

2. Download the app

Download the ABN AMRO app and open an account. You can open a current account using the ABN AMRO app if you: 

  • are aged 18 years or older 
  • have an official Dutch home address 
  • have a valid Dutch ID, a residence permit or a passport from another country 
  • are liable to pay taxes in the Netherlands (and possibly also in another country)
3. Identify yourself

Take a photo of your ID. You can open a current account through the ABN AMRO app using the following ID documents: 

  • Dutch proof of identity (ID card, driving licence or passport) 
  • a Dutch residence permit (type I, II, III, IV, V, or EU/EEA) 
  • a passport from another country (with the exception of a United States passport) 

Tips for taking a photo: 

  • Avoid glare and turn off the flash 
  • Position your passport within the frame 
  • Use a dark background
4. Take a photo

Use your phone’s camera to take a profile photo. This is so we can verify that you’re the person shown on your ID. 

Tips for taking a photo: 

  • Take the photo in light surroundings 
  • Avoid backlight (i.e. don’t take a photo with the sun behind you) 
  • Hold your device straight in front of your face
5. Review your details

When opening your account, please answer the question about the monthly income you receive in your current account. It’s important that your income is paid into your new ABN AMRO account each month, as this is confirmation that you wish to become a Preferred Banking client and meet the criteria.

Check the information you have filled in. If it’s all correct, confirm your request using the unique code shown on your screen.

6. Your request has been sent!

We’ll start the process to open your account after verifying the information you have entered. You’ll receive confirmation of the status of your request within four hours by text message or email. If your request has been approved, we’ll explain the next steps in that confirmation message to help you quickly activate your account.

7. Request the Switching Service

To take advantage of the switching promotion, you need to request the Switching Service after opening your current account. The Switching Service is completely free and can be arranged online. It forwards the transactions from your previous account to your new account for 13 months.

8. Deposit your income or assets in your current account

Congratulations! You’re now a Preferred Banking client and can access COACH, SMART and BENEFITS.

  • Discover articles, videos and podcasts full of tips and info to improve your financial literacy
  • Benefit from unique discounts on culture, sport and financial products

Within the next two weeks, we’ll send you a welcome email to provide more information about Preferred Banking and the benefits you can access. 

You must meet the criteria at all times in order to remain a Preferred Banking client. We’ll check this each year, so please make sure your monthly income continues to be paid into your new current account or your assets remain above the threshold.
