Always choose unique, difficult-to-guess codes

You never know who’s looking over your shoulder

Do you use the same or similar codes for your phone and banking app? Bad idea! If someone sees you enter your phone’s code and then steals your phone, it will be easier for them to guess the code for your banking app. Our tip: always choose unique, difficult-to-guess codes for your phone and banking apps. After all, you never know who’s looking over your shoulder on a busy day like King’s Day. Read on to find out more about how scammers work, and what you can do to protect your money.

Scammers are always on the lookout

Scammers have found a new trick: they watch when you unlock your phone. Why? Because they know that people often use the same or similar codes for their phone and for their banking app and other important apps. This makes them an easy target for scammers. Once they’ve seen your code, they try to steal your phone. When they’ve got hold of your phone, they try to guess the code for your banking app so they can get their hands on your money.

We asked people on the street whether they used facial recognition, a fingerprint or a code to log in. Our fraud expert Kathelijne advises everyone to always be alert and aware of what’s going on around them.

Tips to prevent fraud and make banking more secure

You can stop someone who steals your phone from also getting into your banking app by:

  • Choosing unique, difficult-to-guess codes for your phone and banking apps
  • Making sure that nobody is watching you when you enter your access code
  • Changing your login and access codes on a regular basis
  • If the place you’re in is really busy, not letting anything distract you. Scammers don’t need long to steal your phone.
  • Considering using a fingerprint, Touch ID or Face ID to log into the ABN AMRO app
  • Never telling anyone the code for your phone or banking app, even if they claim to work for the bank or the police. We will never ask for your security codes.
  • Always sticking to the 5 rules for secure banking. We compiled these rules together with other banks and the Dutch consumer’s association.
